While there are holistic benefits to consuming a diet that includes organic foods, they are no more nutritious than conventionally produced foods, according to a new AAP clinical report, Organic Foods: Health and Environmental Advantages and Disadvantages (Pediatrics. 2012;130:e1406-e1415; http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/doi/10.1542/peds.2012-2579).

“The major first priority for parents has to be to feed your kids healthy foods,” said Janet Silverstein, M.D., FAAP, a co-author of the report and member of the AAP Committee on Nutrition. “Give them a diet that has lots of fruits and vegetables, fiber in the form of whole grains, and low-fat foods. If they want organic foods and can afford them, I would encourage them to buy what they feel is best. I would certainly educate them about the issues noted in the report so that they can make informed decisions.”
