The Academy has 50 sections that are devoted to pediatric subspecialties, surgical specialties, special interest areas or stages of life.

The Section on Medical Students, Residents and Fellowship Trainees claims the largest membership, followed by the Sections on Perinatal Pediatrics, Med-Peds (internal medicine-pediatrics), Young Physicians, Osteopathic Pediatricians and Hospital Medicine.

The oldest sections were formed in 1948: Allergy (now Allergy and Immunology), Surgery, and Mental Growth and Development (now the Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health).

The newest section, the Provisional Section on Tobacco Control, was introduced in July.
