The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has proposed a one-year delay for implementation of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM). Under the HHS proposed rule, entities covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act would be required to implement the ICD-10-CM code set and guidelines by Oct. 1, 2014, rather than Oct. 1, 2013.

The proposed rule was published in the Federal Register on April 17, 2012, marking the beginning of the 30-day comment period. While the Academy will be commenting on this proposal, individuals also may submit comments by visiting; follow the “submit a comment” instructions.
