The Academy has a tool in its arsenal that will help members in practice, including pediatric medical subspecialists and surgical specialists, qualify for and receive enhanced Medicaid payments.

Several recent pieces of federal legislation — the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act and certain portions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) — require clarification regarding which physicians qualify as “pediatricians.”

To ensure that physicians who have been trained to provide optimal care to pediatric patients qualify for these reimbursements, and to meet the needs of these legislative initiatives, the Academy has developed its own official definition of “pediatrician.” This definition, which includes pediatric medical subspecialists and surgical specialists, was intentionally written in broad and inclusive language.
