At press time, it was not clear what role the virus may have played in the deaths, and state and local health departments continued to investigate.
Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is developing treatment recommendations for children who have experienced neurologic illness with limb weakness or paralysis, which is suspected of being linked to EV-D68. It still is too early to know the cause of these neurologic symptoms or whether the children will fully recover.
A new, faster lab test for detecting EV-D68 in specimens from patients with respiratory illness has been developed by the CDC. This test will allow more rapid testing of the approximately 1,000 remaining specimens received from 45 states since mid-September.
