Remembered by colleagues as an “intellectually phenomenal” infectious diseases pediatrician who “could make anything interesting,” S. Michael Marcy, M.D., FAAP, of Los Angeles, died Sept. 5 of cancer. He was 77.

Dr. Marcy received the 2012 AAP Section on Infectious Diseases Award for a Lifetime Contribution in Infectious Diseases Education. He was a member of the section, the Committee on Infectious Diseases, Committee on Continuing Medical Education and was chair of PREP The Course and co-chair of PREP:ID.

Dr. Marcy’s full-time practice experience combined with academic acumen gave him a unique perspective to look at how recommendations would impact the care of children, noted 2000-’12 Red Book editor Larry K. Pickering, M.D., FAAP. Whether it was during planning meetings for the AAP Red Book or as a contributing member of an Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meeting, “You always came away from discussions (with Dr. Marcy) a little smarter.”...
