AAP advocacy with health insurance carriers at the national and chapter levels has led to enhanced benefits coverage and payment for recommended pediatric services, particularly those outlined in Bright Futures: Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children, and Adolescents. Following are some recent successes.

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), coverage of comprehensive lactation support and counseling as well as costs of renting or purchasing breastfeeding equipment extends for the duration of breastfeeding. However, the ACA allows plans and insurers to use reasonable medical management techniques to determine the frequency, method, treatment or setting for a recommended preventive item or service, to the extent not specified in the recommendation or guideline.
