Five AAP chapters were awarded Healthy People grants of $20,000 in July 2012 to develop and implement programs that improve adolescent health.

Following are summaries of each chapter’s program, which address care delivered to adolescents, assist adolescents in and transitioning out of foster care, and combat bullying.

The chapter sought to decrease bullying and harassment of youths who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/gender variant or questioning (LGBTQ) in Orange County schools and increase their resiliency.

Trained youth ambassadors were key in introducing an anti-bullying program to pilot schools. The ambassadors have refined their tools, materials and approach based on feedback from adults and experiences at pilot sites during the 2012-’13 school year.

The chapter also has created opportunities for the professional education of pediatricians and educators regarding bullying and vulnerabilities of LGBTQ youth.
