It is becoming increasingly common for physicians to leave clinical practice during their careers and then seek to re-enter the workforce. Reasons for leaving/re-entry include personal illness, the need to care for family members and moving to an administrative position in a hospital or association. Leaving and re-entering should be regarded as a normal part of a physician’s career trajectory. Just like any other career move, it should be considered and planned carefully.
