Once again, the health care industry is gearing up for the transition to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) code set. While we have been here before in anticipation of an Oct. 1, 2014, deadline, another delay is not anticipated.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) set Oct. 1, 2015, as the deadline to implement the new code set. Many practices were preparing diligently for the transition a year ago, and the hope is that the momentum has continued. For those who postponed planning, it is vital to begin preparations.

CMS has led the charge in preparing practices for the transition. The agency has developed extensive resources based on the varied needs of providers and vendors. There are resources based on specialty, practice size, vendors (e.g., clearinghouses) and payers (e.g., Medicaid).
