Gerardo A. Cabrera-Meza, M.D., of Houston, and Enver Hasanoğlu, M.D., of Ankara, Turkey, were named Honorary Fellows of the Academy.
Dr. Cabrera-Meza, a neonatologist, was educated in the U.S. and then returned to native Guatemala to implement measures that reduced mortality in the nursery by more than 50% in the first year. He introduced mechanical ventilation, a kangaroo care program for mothers and neonates, and established a regimented schedule for nursing education and certification. He also started the neonatology fellowship training at San Carlos Medical School.
An associate professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, he is medical director of the International Neonatology Program at Texas Children’s Hospital. He is a consultant to the World Health Organization/Pan American Health Organization, UNICEF and the Guatemalan Ministry of Health.
