I read the AAP Special Report, "Barriers to Care" with great interest and would like to relate a recent experience with a local community hospital. Several months ago when I was out of town, my 2 year old grandson became ill with a gastroenteritis and possible otitis/sinusitis. My daughter became quite concerned, but was unable to quickly reach a pediatrician and fearing dehydration, thought it prudent to take the boy to an emergency room. During the visit, a CBC, urinalysis and routine chemistries were done (all normal). He was then treated with an injection of Ceftriaxone and sent home.
