The Academy is launching a national campaign urging the use of bicycle helmets.

The plan's advocates hope to reduce the startling number of adults and children who die or suffer brain damage in bicycle accidents each year.

Three campaign leaders — William Boyle, M.D., FAAP, AAP President Birt Harvey, M.D., and Mark Widome, M.D., FAAP,—outlined the campaign at an Annual Meeting press conference. They revealed alarming statistics about the number of Americans involved in bicycle accidents each year.
