AAP model bill seeks vaccine funding

An AAP model bill is designed to increase immunization rates for children by requiring states to purchase and make available necessary vaccines to qualified providers.

The bill, a joint effort of the AAP Committee on Community Health Services and the Provisional Committee on State Legislation, would allow pediatricians to receive vaccines free of charge provided they offer the vaccines to all patients, charge a reasonable administration fee and report specific information to their states.

The proposed legislation would help increase access to care by reducing the financial barriers faced by some families, said Renee Jenkins, M.D., chairwoman of the AAP Committee on Community Health Services.
