Recent child abuse statistics show that while reported child abuse is still increasing, prevention efforts are effective, according to two surveys conducted by the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse (NCPCA).

A nationwide survey reported a 31 percent increase in child abuse reports since 1985 and a 38 percent increase in fatalities for the same time period.

The telephone survey documented more than 2.5 millon reports of child maltreatment and more than 1,200 child abuse-related fatalites reported during 1990.
