Throughout early childhood, Brooke Sander, of Fairfax, Va., couldn't play tag, race her friends to the end of the block, or participate in any physical activity that might induce an asthma attack.

Brooke's severe asthma not only set her apart from peers, it consumed much of her parents' lives as well. Her asthma caused stress, fatigue and put limits on options for family activities.
