Rheumatic fever resurgence

An outbreak of rheumatic fever in the Utah region demonstrates that this disorder "remains an important threat," write the authors of a study in the Feb. 19; 1987, New England Journal of Medicine.

The staff at the Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City saw 74 children with acute rheumatic fever from January 1985 through June 1986. This represents an eight-fold increase, the authors say, over the number of cases seen at the hospital during the past decade.
