Home instruction is recommended only for those few children who cannot attend school. Pediatricians and school officials should cooperate in developing criteria that are consistent with PL 94-142, other federal and state mandates and local policy and need. In any case, home instruction should be generally limited to a period of a few months. The request for home instruction should be accompanied by a signed authorization to obtain all medical records from the child's pediatrician and other medical care providers or facilities as required, and if appropriate, for the school physician consultant to examine the child with the parent present.
