Pertussis outbreak
Health officials in Tarrant County, Texas, recently reported five more cases of pertussis, bringing the number of cases noted there so far this year to 15.
At least one pertussis-related death has been reported this year in nearby Dallas, adds Nancy Bowen, M.D., assistant medical director at the Fort Worth Health Department. In addition, two children, a one-month-old and and a two-month-old, were hospitalized in Tarrant County with pertussis, but were not counted in the county statistics because they reside outside the county limits. Two adults in close contact with these children also contracted pertussis, but were not hospitalized.
