Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. It is responsible for approximately 20 percent of deaths annually. Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is estimated to cause 3,000 lung-cancer deaths per year in nonsmoking Americans. It is also estimated that the elimination of smoking would reduce infant deaths by 10 percent and decrease the incidence of low birth-weight infants by 25 percent.
