Four retailers are recalling Nap Nanny Generations One and Two, and the Chill model portable infant recliners after at least five infants have died and dozens of children have fallen out of the recliners.
Manufacturer Baby Matters LLC of Berwyn, Pa., is unable or unwilling to participate in the recall, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Retailers voluntarily participating in the recall are amazon.com, BuyBuy Baby, diapers.com and Toys R Us/Babies R Us.
The recliners are designed for sleeping, resting and playing, and include a bucket seat foam base and a fitted fabric cover with a three-point harness.
In 2010, CPSC and Baby Matters offered a discount coupon to Generation One owners toward the purchase of a newer model with improved instructions and sent warnings to consumers who owned the Generation Two model. At the time, one death had been reported from use of a Nap Nanny recliner. Even with added warnings and instructions, more deaths have been reported.
Nap Nanny has sold 5,000 Generation One, 50,000 Generation Two and 100,000 Chill models. All models were priced around $130.
