Treating rape victims
Pediatricians need more training in dealing with adolescents who have been raped, an AAP policy statement reports.
Physicians should learn how to treat rape victims during residency and continuing medial education courses, the article published in the April 1988 Pediatrics states.
Pediatricians should know that the physical exam and police interrogation potentially add to the rape victim's trauma.
"The patient should not become further victimized through insensitive care and unnecessary trauma," the policy states.
