Gym set manufacturer pays civil penalty
Hedstrom Corp. has agreed to pay a $165,000 civil penalty to resolve U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) allegations that the firm failed to report defects in some models of its gym sets in a timely manner, CPSC officials stated.
Over a three-year period, 10 children sustained pinched, lacerated or partially amputated finger tips before Hedstrom reported the problem to the CPSC in April 1988. In November 1988, Hedstrom announced that it would replace the glide-ride feature in approximately 370,000 gym sets.
