Infants on adult beds

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) officials report that more than 250 infants ages 12 months or younger, suffocated on adult or youth beds from 1985 through December 1990. These infants died on regular mattress beds or waterbeds.

According to CPSC officials, most of the infants became wedged between the mattresses and the bed frames or walls. In other cases, infants suffocated while sleeping next to other persons who rolled onto them. Some infants suffocated on waterbeds while sleeping stomach down.
