Preparing for flu in child care settings
Pediatricians can protect children from influenza complications by encouraging child care providers to seek education specific to seasonal influenza.
The following resources are available:
- A free online course from the Academy and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention educates staff who work in Head Start and other early education and child care programs about influenza policies and strategies. The course was updated to reflect influenza recommendations for 2015-’16. The course explains how to recognize the symptoms of influenza, how influenza is spread, and how to discuss the importance of annual seasonal influenza immunization with parents and peers. It is approved for 1.0 contact hour, www.healthychildcare.org/flu.html.
- A letter that child care programs can customize to share influenza season planning strategies with parents, https://www.aap.org/en-us/Documents/parent_flu_letter_2015_2016.pdf, and additional online courses for child care providers, www.healthychildcare.org/profdev.html.
- Information on the pediatrician’s role in promoting health and safety in child care, www.healthychildcare.org/PedsRole.html.
- AAP Web pages dedicated to supporting child care providers, www.aap.org/disasters/childcare, and preparing child care programs for pandemic influenza, www.aap.org/disasters/childcarepandemic.

Call for nominations
The AAP Council on Communications and Media is calling for nominations for the 2016 Holroyd-Sherry Award. The deadline for submissions is March 18.
The Academy will recognize one Fellow whose outstanding contributions demonstrated media’s influence on child and adolescent health as an important public health issue, and/or whose work in the areas of advocacy, legislation, research, and professional or public education addresses health implications raised by child and adolescent use of media.
This annual award, initiated in 2000, is named for H. James Holroyd, M.D., FAAP, and S. Norman Sherry, M.D., FAAP. Their leadership in the medical profession, which began in 1983 with their service as founding members of the Task Force on Children and Television, helped establish within the Academy and the medical community the powerful influence media messages have on the health and well-being of children and adolescents.
