Pediatric dermatology Case of the Month
The AAP Section on Dermatology (SOD) is launching an online self-assessment feature titled Case of the Month. On the first of each month, a new dermatology case will be posted on the SODs home page. Cases of interest and those that address American Board of Pediatrics content specifications will be presented. The Healthcare Simulation Dictionary is a first-of-its-kind reference designed as a centralized, living document of terms used in the field of health care simulation.

Vaccine storage, handling toolkit
Refrigerated vaccines should be stored at 36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit, a change from previously recommended temperatures of 35 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit, according to an updated Vaccine Storage and Handling Toolkit from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Celsius temperature range (between 2 and 8 degrees) is unchanged, according to the CDC.
Vaccines stored in the freezer should maintain temperatures between -50 and -15 degrees Celsius (-58 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit). Access the toolkit at http://bit.ly/29JNgsV.
New provisional section focuses on simulation
The Academy has formed a new provisional section designed to meet the evolving needs of medical students, residents and those maintaining competency and continuing medical education.
The Provisional Section on Simulation and Innovative Learning Methods (PSOSILM), chaired by Taylor L. Sawyer, D.O., M.Ed., FAAP, will focus on simulation and novel educational methods like eLearning, mobile learning and game-based learning. Its members will seek input from AAP membership about approaches to simulation as a teaching and learning technique to improve how pediatricians care for children.
“We are thinking about simulations to practice difficult conversations about vaccines, sexual orientation and genetic testing as well as office-based procedures such as LARC (long-acting reversible contraception) in addition to more traditional simulation such as resuscitations and office-based emergency preparedness,” said Marjorie Lee White, M.D., M.P.P.M., M.A., FAAP, a member of the PSOSILM Executive Committee.
The PSOSILM anticipates the involvement of at least 1,000 at-large section members, with rapid growth expected over the next 10 years. Executive committee members have expertise in simulation and hold leadership roles in organizations that focus on simulation and innovative learning.
The provisional section already is planning its first educational program on pediatric office-based simulation, which will be held during the 2017 AAP National Conference & Exhibition in Chicago.
