Several companies have recalled heartburn drugs that contain ranitidine. The drugs might cause cancer because they contain a substance called N-nitrosodimethylamine.

Ranitidine is used by children and adults with heartburn from acid indigestion and sour stomach. The drug is sold as a capsule, tablet and oral syrup over the counter and by prescription.

Among recalled brands and products are Sanofi, recalling Zantac 150, Zantac 150 cool mint and Zantac 75 OTC products; Novitium Pharma, recalling ranitidine hydrochloride capsules (150 mg and 300 mg); Lannett Company Inc. recalling ranitidine syrup/ranitidine oral solution USP (15 mg/mL); Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd. recalling Dr. Reddy’s, Kroger, Walgreens and other ranitidine tablets and capsules; Perrigo Company recalling ranitidine in all pack sizes; Apotex Corp. recalling ranitidine tablets (75 mg and 150 mg); and Sandoz Inc. recalling ranitidine hydrochloride capsules.

The Food and Drug Administration is advising people who take ranitidine products to stop using the products and talk with their physician about alternate treatment options.
