Some animal diseases can make kids sick
Visiting the animals at a fair or petting zoo this summer or fall?
Tens of thousands of people get sick each year from illnesses spread by animals. Even animals that do not look sick can spread diseases. Pigs can spread swine flu, for example. And backyard chickens, pet birds, reptiles and amphibians can spread Salmonella, E. coli, ringwormand other germs.
When visiting animals, keep these facts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in mind.
- Wash hands after touching animals; after being near the animal exhibits even if you did not touch the animals; and after wearing gloves while touching animals.
- Do not let kids sit on the ground near exhibits.
- Do not eat, drink or bring sippy cups, bottles or pacifiers near the animals.
- Children younger than 5 years old and those with weak immune systems are more likely to get seriously sick from animal diseases.
