Health Alerts: Sippy cups, bike helmets, and more recalled :

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the recall of the following products. Consumers should stop using recalled products unless otherwise instructed. Consumers can submit reports of harm to CPSC’s searchable online product safety database at www.SaferProducts.gov. A searchable food and medical product recall database is available at www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/default.htm.

 

Sippy cups

 

Units: About 3.1 million

Hazard: Mold can develop on the removable valve inside the cup.

Description: Recalled are five types of spill-proof Tommee Tippee Sippee cups all with a removable, one-piece white valve. They include: First Sips Transition cup, Trainer Sippee cup, Sippee cup (including Cute Quips), Sportee bottle and Insulated Swiggle/Sippee tumblers. The plastic cups have spill-proof tops, easy-grip sides with detachable handles and colored lids. They hold 7 or 10 ounces of liquid.

Incidents/injuries: There have been 3,066 reports of mold in the lid’s valve, including 68 reports of children experiencing diarrhea, vomiting or other symptoms associated with drinking from a cup with mold in the valve.

Sold at: BuyBuy Baby, CVS, Giant, Kohl’s, Marco Baby, Marshalls, Meijer, Sam’s Club, Ross Stores, Target, Bealls Outlet, Walgreens, Wal-Mart and other mass merchandise stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Babyhaven.com and Diapers.com from December 2014 through May 2016 for $4 to $7.

Remedy: Contact the company for a replacement cup.

Pacifiers and clips

Units: About 180,000

Hazard: The clip cover can detach from the pacifier’s clip, and young children can choke on it.

Description: This recall involves Munchkin’s Latch lightweight pacifiers and clips sold as a set. The pacifiers were sold in a variety of styles and colors.

Sold at: Babies R Us, Target, Wal-Mart and other mass merchandisers, juvenile product, baby boutique and discount stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Munchkin.com and other websites from March 2014 through March 2016 for $11 to $15.

Remedy: Contact Munchkin for a free replacement pack with two pacifiers or a refund.

Jewelry kits

Units: About 175,000

Hazard: The slider bracelet in the jewelry making kit contains high levels of lead, which can be toxic if ingested by young children.

Description: Recalled are two models of LaRose’s Jewelz Gem Creations jewelry making kit and one refill product. The UPC code is printed on the outside of the product box and on the bottom of the machine. Products include: Shimmer N’ Sparkle Cra-Z-Art Cra-Z-Jewelz Gem Creations Ultimate Gem Machine jewelry making kit (UPC #884920174504); Shimmer N’ Sparkle Cra-Z-Art Cra-Z-Jewelz Gem Creations Gem Charm and Slider Bracelets refill components for the jewelry making kit (UPC #884920174849); and My Look Cra-Z-Art Cra-Z-Jewelz Gem Creations Ultimate Gem Machine jewelry making kit (UPC #884920466340).

Sold at: The machines were sold at Kmart, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, Target and other retailers from August 2015 through April 2016 for $30. The charm and slider bracelets were sold at Toys R Us, Wal-Mart and other retailers from August 2015 through April 2016 for $10.

Bike helmets

Units: About 129,000

Hazard: The magnetic buckle on the helmet’s chin strap contains small plastic covers and magnets that can come loose. Children can choke on or swallow the magnets.

Description: This recall involves infant bicycle helmets with magnetic no-pinch chin strap buckles for children ages 1-3 years old. The helmets come in various colors and designs. “SCHWINN” is printed on the front of the helmets.

Sold exclusively at: Target stores and online at www.target.com from January 2014 to April 2016 for $18 to $25.

Remedy: Contact Pacific Cycle for instructions on how to receive a replacement helmet.

Backpack carriers

Units: About 31,000

Hazard: A cut in the plastic buckle on the shoulder strap can cause the strap to release, and children in the carrier can fall.

Description: Recalled are Poco AG, Poco AG Plus and Poco AG Premium model child backpack carriers. These nylon carriers come in blue, green and black. They have a metal frame and a gray padded child’s seat inside. The production date code identifying when the carrier was manufactured is stamped on a black label sewn in the large lower zippered compartment in the back of the carrier. Recalled carriers have a production date code of S16SB03, S16SB04, S16SB05, S16SB06 or S16SB07. “Osprey” and the model name are printed on the back of the carrier.

Sold at: REI and specialty outdoor retailers nationwide and online at Amazon.com and REI.com from January through May 2016 for $250 to $330.

Remedy: Inspect the buckles on both straps of the carrier harness to determine if there is a cut in the plastic buckle on one or both straps. If the buckle is cut, do not use the carrier and contact Osprey for a replacement or refund. Consumers also can contact Osprey for inspection.

Baby rattles

 

Units: About 14,400

Hazard: The rattle seams can separate, and children can choke on the fiber stuffing and bell rattle.

Description: This recall involves Little Wishes Chenille Stuffed Rattles, including the Pink & Green Fish rattles, item number 5141577, and the Blue & Yellow Fish rattles, item number 5127642. The rattles are made of a soft chenille fabric with a fiber stuffing. “Reg. No. PA-15130(CN)” and “Hobby Lobby 9123069” are printed on a sewn-in label.

Sold exclusively at: Hobby Lobby stores nationwide from January through April 2016 for about $7.

Remedy: Return rattles to Hobby Lobby for a refund or store credit.

Pacifier holders

Units: About 12,900

Hazard: The whale fin and octopus head can detach from the pacifier holder, and children can choke on them.

Description: This recall involves Little Wishes Summer Plush Pacifier Holder, including the Blue Whale, item number 5202601, and the Pink Octopus, item number 5725213. The pacifier holders are made of a plush fabric, stuffed with fiber and have a ribbon attached to the body. “Hobby Lobby 9123069” is printed on the sewn-in label.

Sold exclusively at: Hobby Lobby stores nationwide from January through April 2016 for about $5.

Remedy: Return to Hobby Lobby for a refund or store credit.

Infant carriers

 

Units: About 4,000

Hazard: The waist buckle can break, and children in the carrier can fall.

Description: The Twin Go Original Carrier is designed to carry one or two babies against the caregiver’s body at the waist. It is intended for babies who weigh 10-45 pounds. Carriers are black on the outside and blue or orange on the inside. “Twin Go” is printed on a label on the front of the carrier, and an 11-digit batch number is printed on a label sewn to the waistband. Batch numbers included in this recall include 23014024003, 01515026003 and 21615019001.

Sold at: Boutique stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com and TwinGoCarrier.com from December 2014 through May 2016 for about $215.

Bedside sleepers

Units: About 500

Hazard: Babies can fall out of the bedside sleepers.

Description: This recall involves Bednest bedside infant sleepers manufactured after July 2014. The date of manufacture is stamped underneath the base of the bedside sleepers. The Bednest has beech wood ends with white fabric sides over metal frames on a beech wood height-adjustable stand.

Sold exclusively online: at www.Bednest.com from March 2010 through December 2015 for $400 to $500 or if rented from $170 to $200.

Remedy: Stop using the recalled bedside sleeper while the sides are fully open. Bednest sent free repair kits to consumers that will permanently lock the side rail into place.

Strollers

 

Units: About 630

Hazard: The hinge used to fold the stroller can become damaged, posing a pinch hazard.

Description: This recall involves phil&teds dash v5 buggy-style strollers with serial numbers ranging between PTRV 0715/0746 and PTRV 0815/2525. The serial number is printed on the lower left rear cradle, next to the identification label. Colors and models included in the recall are: Black (UPC: 9 420015754: 155 DASH_V5_5); Grey Marl (UPC: 9 420015754 179; DASH_V5_7); Blue Marl (UPC: 9 420015754; 186 DASH_V5_3); and Red (UPC: 9 420015754 162 DASH_V5_11).

Sold at: Baby Street, Dainty Baby, Mega Babies and other baby product and specialty stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Diapers.com and philandteds.com from August 2015 through April 2016 for about $550.

Remedy: Contact phil&teds to have the stroller frame replaced.
