Dr. Grosfeld, surgical pioneer

Known for expertise in neonatal surgery, pediatric surgical oncology and surgical education, Jay L. Grosfeld, M.D., FAAP, of Indianapolis, died Oct. 19. He was 81.

Chair of the AAP Section on Surgery from 1994-’95, Dr. Grosfeld was twice honored with awards from the Academy. In 2012, he received the Arnold M. Salzberg Mentorship Award, which recognizes surgeons who are distinguished mentors. In 2002, he received the William E. Ladd Medal Award, the section’s highest honor for contributions to the field of pediatric surgery.

Dr. Grosfeld was president of the American Pediatric Surgical Association (1994-’95) and was the only pediatric surgeon to serve as chairman of the American Board of Surgery. Among 15 international fellowships, he was an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. He earned a U.S. Army Commendation Medal.

Dr. Grosfeld received his medical degree from New York University (NYU) School of Medicine in 1961. He then trained in general surgery at NYU and Bellevue Hospitals until 1966. After two years of service as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he attended Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital to train in pediatric surgery. Dr. Grosfeld served as director of pediatric surgery at Indiana University and was Riley Children’s Hospital’s first surgeon-in-chief. In 1985, he was appointed chair of the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery.

Wilma L. Krause, M.D., FAAP, of Atlanta, died Nov. 11 at age 85.

Samuel R. Leavitt, M.D., FAAP, of San Mateo, Calif., died Nov. 3 at age 87.

Jeannette Marlow, M.D., FAAP, of Canaan, Conn., died Oct. 1 at age 93.

Richard O. Rutland III, M.D., FAAP, of Gadsden, Ala., died Nov. 16 at age 65.

Minnie Vance, M.D., FAAP, of Cleveland, Tenn., died Oct. 7 at age 94.

Arthur D. Wolk, M.D., FAAP, of Rutland, Vt., died Nov. 17 at age 97.
