Editor's note: The 2018 AAP National Conference & Exhibition will take place from Nov. 2-6 in Orlando.

Conference attendees will have the opportunity to hear from the two candidates running for 2019 AAP president-elect during Sunday’s plenary session from 10:30-10:45 a.m. in the Valencia Ballroom of the convention center. Sara “Sally” H. Goza, M.D., FAAP, and George C. Phillips, M.D., M.B.A., FAAP, will  present their final campaign speeches while addressing hot topics.

Dr. Goza is a general pediatrician in Fayetteville, Ga. She is a managing partner in First Georgia Physicians Group.

Dr. Phillips, of Overland Park, Kan., is division director of general academic pediatrics at Children's Mercy Kansas City and division director of general pediatrics at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Voters also will elect district officers in six out of 10 districts.

The election ballot also includes a referendum question that seeks to revise the AAP bylaws. The proposed bylaws revisions include the following:

  • Addition of the word “elected” to the following bylaw: “All elected members of the Board of Directors must remain Fellow or Specialty Fellow members of the AAP in good standing.” This change clarifies the requirements for the CEO/executive vice president position, which is an ex officio position.
  • Addition of three at-large Board of Director seats representing committees, councils and sections. If adopted, the change would diversify representation on the board beyond geographic districts to include a broader range of the organization’s constituencies, which aligns with the AAP Five-Year Strategic Plan.
  • Addition of three National Nominating Committee members representing committees, councils, sections and former elected leaders.
  • Addition of up to three District Nominating Committee members representing committees, councils and sections.
  • Change in terms for district chairs, district vice chairs and at-large board members from two, three-year terms to one, four-year term.
  • Voting eligibility for candidate members.
  • Addition of pediatric laboratory directors and pediatric pharmacists as eligible for national affiliate membership.

Adoption of the bylaws revisions requires approval by two-thirds of voters.

Voting has begun and will conclude at noon CT on Dec. 2. The new president-elect and newly elected district officers will take office on Jan. 1, 2019. The president-elect will serve as AAP president in 2020.
