Program ensures hospital resources match children’s surgical needs :

April 20, 2020

Studies show children with certain conditions undergoing surgery generally have better outcomes at centers with greater expertise and/or resources.

A new AAP technical report updates a children’s surgery verification program from the American College of Surgeons (ACS CSV). The AAP-endorsed ACS CSV program defines resources needed to ensure pediatric patients receiving surgical care at verified health care facilities have optimal outcomes and offers institutional verification to sites that meet the standards. The program has verified hospitals and medical centers around the country and plans to verify more than 20 additional pediatric perioperative programs this year.

The report Optimizing Resources in Children’s Surgical Care: An Update on the American College of Surgeons’ Verification Program, from the AAP Section on Surgery, Committee on Fetus and Newborn and Section on Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, is available at https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2020/04/16/peds.2020-0708 and will be published in the May issue of Pediatrics.
