Don’t miss early registration deadline, Aug. 4

The AAP National Conference & Exhibition in Chicago is just around the corner, with early bird registration rates ending Aug. 4. The Sept. 16-19 meeting features plenary sessions on the opioid epidemic, immigrant child health, advocacy and gun safety among the 350 educational sessions.

The keynote address on Sept. 16 will feature Luz Towns-Miranda, Ph.D. Known for her work on assessment and treatment of children in foster care, mental health and substance abuse services, custody evaluations and teaching about the impact of trauma on children, Dr. Towns-Miranda is a licensed clinical psychologist.

“Children’s Health: What’s at Stake in the New Administration,” presented by Lynda Young, M.D., FAAP, recaps the first year of the Trump administration and Congress and what is at stake for children’s health at the federal level. Dr. Young also will outline current child health priorities for members to help advance.

“Children in Immigrant Families — A Policy and Advocacy Update,” with Julie Linton, M.D., FAAP, looks at the impact of federal policies on clinical care and identifies opportunities for AAP members to support children in immigrant families.

Ravi Shah, M.D., and Santhanam Suresh, M.D., FAAP, look at the impact of prescription drug abuse on the pediatric population. “The Opioid Crisis: Implications for Pediatric Pain Management” offers evidence-based solutions to opioid use for children suffering from acute and chronic pain. Safe opioid prescribing guidelines and the prioritization of non-opioid alternatives for pediatric pain management also are described.

Other breaking science topics explore: “Flushing Out ‘Fake News’ in GI: Getting to the Truth About PPIs, PEG 3350 and Gluten”; “Gluten-, Wheat-, or FODMAP-Free Diets: What They Are and When to Use Them”; “#Selfie Esteem: Social Media’s Influence on Adolescent Body Image and Eating Disorders”; “Bullying and LGBTQ Youths”; “Doctor Heal Thyself: Health and Wellness for the Pediatrician”; and “What the Pediatrician Needs to Know About the 2017 AAP Guidelines for Childhood Hypertension.”

Bring family and plan to attend the President’s Welcome Reception at the Museum of Science and Industry and family night at Navy Pier, complete with children’s museum, Ferris wheel and a sampling of Chicago cuisine.
