Following are course highlights:
- Learn “Why You Should Not ‘Just Try a Gluten Free Diet,’” with Ivor D. Hill, M.B., Ch.B., M.D., FAAP. Dr. Hill’s session will help you differentiate celiac disease from other conditions caused by gluten ingestion. You’ll also learn to discern appropriate tests to identify gluten-related disorders and how to use a gluten-free diet appropriately.
- Do you know how to differentiate the types of peer victimization, including physical bullying, verbal/social bullying, cyberbullying and ostracism? Michelle M. Macias, M.D., FAAP, will describe how to identify surveillance and screening techniques and outline intervention plans for children and adolescents experiencing bullying and ostracism at her session “Bullying and Ostracism: Prevention and Intervention.”
- Sure, many patients have acne, but Patricia A. Treadwell, M.D., FAAD, FAAP, will give an “Acne Update” that will have you heading down the right path to acne pathogenesis and available treatment options. Abnormal keratinization and some of the side effects of medications also will be addressed.
- It bears repeating that “Overuse Injuries in Youth Athletics” make up more than half of all sports injuries. Paul R. Stricker, M.D., FAAP, reviews common overuse injuries, their causes and the best treatment and prevention.
- Genes are no mystery, as Tamison Jewett, M.D., FACMGG, FAAP, explains the clues to “Genetics and Dysmorphology: Diagnosis and Management.” At this session, you will review the diagnostic criteria and natural history of neurofibromatosis, type 1; recognize the features of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders; understand the etiology and management of Pierre-Robin sequence and review the cause and features of common contiguous gene deletion syndromes.
- ’Tis the season to learn to develop a differential diagnosis for atypical pneumonia. Veda L. Ackerman, M.D., FCCP, FAAP, will discuss the use of chest radiographs in the diagnosis of respiratory symptoms and describe how to develop a diagnostic plan for the child with noisy breathing at “Case Based Approach to Pulmonary Diagnostic Challenges.”
