Pediatrics fills more than 97% of positions in the 2022 Match

March 18, 2022

In a video message, AAP President Moira A. Szilagyi, M.D., Ph.D., FAAP, congratulated medical students who matched into pediatric residency programs today.

On Match Day, medical students and graduates learn in which U.S. residency program they will train. A total of 39,205 positions were offered in this year’s National Resident Matching Program Main Residency Match, the largest on record. The number of first-year positions offered was 36,277, up from 35,194 offered in 2021. This year, 2,262 positions were unfilled — 335 more than last year

Allopathic (M.D.) and osteopathic (D.O.) applicants now take part in one matching program.

Categorical pediatrics filled 97.2% and internal medicine-pediatrics filled 100% of positions offered. In 2021, the numbers were 98.5% and 100%, respectively.

“Welcome to the life-changing and life-affirming profession of pediatrics,” Dr. Szilagyi said. “...The work we do makes such an impact.”

She also invited newly matched physicians to share Match Day celebrations using #FutureFAAP and encouraged them to join the AAP Section on Pediatric Trainees, which also is inviting them to share Match results at @AAPSOPT.
