Rocking sleeper recalls reissued following additional infant deaths

January 11, 2023

Fisher-Price and Kids2 have re-announced recalls for their rocking sleeper products after several more children reportedly died after rolling over in the sleepers while unrestrained.

Fisher-Price first recalled 4.7 million Rock ‘n Play Sleepers in April 2019 after at least 30 infant deaths were reported. Since the recall, 70 additional child deaths have been reported, including at least 8 fatalities that occurred after the initial recall announcement.

Kids2 initially recalled 694,000 Rocking Sleeper products in April 2019 after 15 infant deaths were reported. There were 11 deaths before the recall announcement and four deaths reported after.

According to both recalls, unrestrained infants using the rocking sleepers were able to roll onto their stomach or side, causing their deaths.

“The Consumer Product Safety Commission is re-announcing two recalls of inclined infant sleepers that were issued nearly four years ago,” CPSC Chair Alexander Hoehn-Saric said in a statement. “We are issuing this announcement because …  babies continue to die in these products. Unfortunately, today’s announcement highlights the fact that these products are still in too many homes, and babies continue to be put at risk. Remember that the safest place for a baby to sleep is a firm, flat surface without any blankets or pillows.”

The Rock ‘n Play Sleepers were sold at major retailers nationwide, including Walmart, Target and Amazon from September 2009 to April 2019 for $40 to $149. The Kids2 Rocking Sleepers were sold at major retailers nationwide, including Walmart, Target and Toys “R” Us from March 2012 to April 2019 for $40 to $80.
