Pediatrics fills 97% of positions in the 2023 Match

March 17, 2023

AAP President Sandy L. Chung, M.D., FAAP, welcomed future pediatricians in a video message today as medical students and graduates learned where they matched in pediatric residency programs.

Dr. Chung called pediatrics “the most exciting and rewarding specialty.” She assured the future residents that the AAP and the AAP Section on Pediatric Trainees will support them “through every step of this incredible journey.”

In this year’s Match Day, the total number of certified positions offered in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Main Residency Match was 40,375, up from 36,277 in 2022. There were 571 more primary care positions than in 2022, and they filled at a rate of 94.2%. This year 2,685 positions were unfilled.

Categorical pediatrics filled 97% of positions offered, and internal medicine-pediatrics filled 99% of positions offered.

“The work you do will have an enormous impact on your patients, communities, and the future of children everywhere,” Dr. Chung said. “We hope you'll take advantage of all the educational advocacy, mentoring and leadership development activities that the AAP has to offer you.”

This year marked a record number of 42,952 active applicants in the largest Match in the 70-year history of the NRMP.
