BearCare Inc. is recalling nearly 1,000 rechargeable Walnut Wearable Smart Thermometers following reports of skin burns and irritation in children who used the devices.
The Walnut Thermometer is an over-the-counter rechargeable device intended for continuous chest temperature monitoring of children ages 0-6 years. Potential overheating and leakage of corrosive chemicals from the device can cause skin irritation, burns or other serious injuries.
The device includes a thermometer unit, a base station, adhesive strip, user manual and charging cable. It is paired with an application on a mobile phone, and its silicone exterior resembles a cartoon penguin.
The recall includes 979 Walnut Wearable Smart Thermometers sold through Amazon.com, Walmart.com and www.walnutcares.com from December 2022 to April 2023. Recalled devices include model number WT20 and lot number 20221115W002.
Consumers should stop using the thermometer and look for signs of moisture or leakage, which could cause chemical burns to those who touch the product. Parents and caregivers should check for corrosive fluids on children’s bodies, including the mouth and eyes. Seek immediate medical attention if someone was exposed to moisture from the device or is experiencing any symptoms related to device failure.
Consumers should email [email protected] to receive a prepaid shipping label to return their devices.
