Pfizer has released information on ordering its new monovalent COVID-19 vaccines, which are pending final approval from regulators.

Manufacturers have been formulating new vaccines containing the SARS-CoV-2 omicron XBB.1.5 strain at the request of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is expected to approve the vaccines in the coming weeks. Following approval, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will determine who should get a dose.

Pediatricians can place initial stocking orders for Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines through Pfizer Prime or through wholesalers. Billing, shipping and delivery will take place following regulatory approval.

Vaccine doses for people ages 12 years and older will be 30 micrograms (mcg) that come in single-dose vials or single-dose prefilled syringes. There will be limited quantities of prefilled syringes and they will not be available for initial stocking orders.

For children ages 5-11 years, the vaccines are expected to be 10 mcg. They will come in single-dose vials. For children ages 6 months through 4 years, vaccines will be 3 mcg. These vaccines for young children will come in multidose vials with three doses that require dilution.

For initial stocking orders placed directly with Pfizer, the greater of the direct minimum order quantity units of sale or 15% of total doses purchased may be returned for full invoice price. The full return policy is at Pfizer Prime under Terms of Sale.

The products will ship from Pfizer at ultra-low temperatures. They can be stored in an ultra-low freezer at -90 to -60 degrees Celsius until their expiration date. They also can be stored at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius for up to 10 weeks. They cannot be refrozen.

Pediatricians also can order Moderna’s monovalent COVID-19 vaccines. For more information visit
