Hospital Pediatrics devotes special issue to mental health crisis

May 1, 2024

Hospital Pediatrics is publishing a special issue this month to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month. Topics covered include suicide screening, identifying firearm access and holistic care of hospitalized children with autism.

The articles highlight how hospitals and researchers have risen to the challenge of caring for the growing number of pediatric patients with mental health concerns. Articles will be posted online and remain available for free in May and June.

Healthy Mental and Emotional Development is one of the strategic initiatives the AAP Board identified as a top priority for 2024. The Academy recently renewed its call for action on child and adolescent mental health. In 2021, the AAP joined the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Children’s Hospital Association in declaring a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health, which brought attention to a growing mental health crisis amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
