The AAP has partnered with SocialOffset, a nonprofit group, to assist Florida-based organizations that support housing security, environmental sustainability, LGBTQ+/equality and hunger relief during the 2024 National Conference & Exhibition in Orlando.

The AAP is committed to inclusion, equity and respectful treatment of all those attending the National Conference Sept. 27 to Oct. 1 and seeks to provide a professional atmosphere in which attendees can learn and network with colleagues.

The campaign will allow attendees to offset spending in a state with laws that do not align with their values by making it easy to donate to causes in Florida that do.

“On behalf of pediatricians in Florida, the support from our pediatric colleagues means so much to us all,” said National Conference Planning Group member Rani S. Gereige, M.D., M.P.H., FAAP, who is executive director of medical education at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami. “The SocialOffset campaign is an opportunity for conference attendees to make an impact by doing what pediatricians do best for all children and teens everywhere, and lifting up organizations committed to equity, inclusion and advocacy for children and families living throughout Florida.”

The AAP selected the following organizations for the campaign:

  • Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, which helps families and individuals return to stable, permanent homes as quickly as possible. It serves more than 500 men, women and children each day through residential programs and more than 100 unsheltered individuals daily through community initiatives.
  • Conservation Florida, a statewide land conservancy protecting Florida’s natural and agricultural landscapes with a focus on saving land within the Florida Wildlife Corridor.
  • Zebra Youth, which provides services to LGBTQ+ youths ages 13-24 years, including those facing homelessness, bullying, family isolation, and physical, sexual and drug abuse, with individualized programs to guide them to recovery and stability.
  • Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, a nonprofit organization that collects, stores and distributes donated food to more than 750 partners such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, senior centers and child care centers in seven central Florida counties.

SocialOffset was founded to provide an alternative to boycotting events and destinations. The AAP has worked with SocialOffset to select vetted charities for each cause area to maximize donor impact. Donations are tax deductible, and 100% of donations go to the charity. To participate, visit aapexperience.org/make-a-difference.

Registration to attend the National Conference in person or virtually is open for AAP members and nonmembers. For more information and to register, visit www.aapexperience.org.
