Keynote speakers announced for National Conference & Exhibition

The U.S. assistant secretary for health and a journalist committed to debunking misinformation will be the keynote speakers at the 2024 AAP National Conference & Exhibition.

The AAP announced Tuesday that Adm. Rachel L. Levine, M.D., FAAP, and Seema Yasmin, M.D., will speak to Academy members gathering next month in Orlando for the annual conference. Register by Friday at https://bit.ly/3M6dCal to save up to 30%.

Saturday, Sept. 28: Seema Yasmin, M.D.

Dr. Yasmin is a clinical assistant professor at Stanford University’s Department of Medicine and teaches crisis management and communications at the University of California, Los Angeles. She also investigated infectious disease outbreaks across the globe for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

She is an Emmy-winning journalist, Pulitzer Prize finalist and director of the Stanford Health Communication Initiative who works toward curtailing the spread of health-related misinformation and disinformation.

Dr. Yasmin’s 2023 book, What the Fact? Finding the Truth in All the Noise, is a guide to identifying poorly sourced and misleading news for young readers ages 12 and up.

She also has written about health, science, and intersectionality for The New York Times, Rolling Stone, WIRED and Scientific American, and appears on CNN as a medical analyst.

Sunday, Sept. 29: Adm. Rachel L. Levine, M.D., FAAP

Adm. Levine is the assistant secretary for health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and leads the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, focusing on ensuring health equity.

She received the AAP Child Health Advocate Award from the Committee on State Government Affairs in 2020 when she served as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Health. She was recognized for “outstanding work to improve the lives of children and families in Pennsylvania,” including efforts concerning the COVID-19 pandemic, the state’s opioid crisis and other public health challenges.

Her work as a pediatrician in academic medicine focused on the intersection of mental and physical health.
