2024 AAP Award Winners

More than 80 pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists and trainees are recognized for exemplary achievements in advocacy, practice and research that impact the care of children every day. The awards are given out during the AAP National Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, Fla. The AAP congratulates the health care professionals who are making a difference in pediatrics.

 

AAP Education Award

Louis P. Halamek, M.D., FAAP

He is a professor in the Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University and an attending neonatologist at Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.

 

AAP Samuel J. Fomon Nutrition Award

Nancy Butte, Ph.D.

She is an emeritus professor at Baylor College of Medicine who had a 36-year career at the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Agricultural Research Service Children’s Nutrition Research Center within the Department of Pediatrics. Her primary area of research was energy metabolism with an emphasis on energy requirements for infants and children and childhood obesity.

He is the former director of pediatric dermatology at Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Cohennow serves in a transitional retirement program at Johns Hopkins that allows him to collaborate on multiple projects focused on education and research within the pediatric dermatology space.

Anderson Aldrich Award for Lifetime Achievement in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics

Nathan J. Blum, M.D., FAAP

He is chief of the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and W.T. Grant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

He is the Purcell Family Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics and chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center/Golisano Children’s Hospital.

He is the Robert Pritzker Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics and chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine and the surgeon-in-chief of the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital.

She is a dedicated advocate for children’s health, focusing on the intersection of climate change and marginalized communities. Dr. Byron is a past president of the Montana Chapter and founder of the first Reach Out and Read program in Montana.

He is a clinical professor of pediatrics at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and practices primary care pediatrics at Partners in Pediatrics, University Hospitals of Cleveland.

Noelle Hanako Ebel, M.D., FAAP

She is an associate professor at Stanford University and the inaugural hepatology section chief and co-director of the Solid Organ Transplant Center at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health. She also is the co-director of policy in the Office of Child Health Equity. Her current health equity work centers on disparities in pediatric liver transplantation and working with subspecialists across divisions to increase policy engagement.

F. Edwards Rushton Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Award

Stephanie A. Denton, M.D., FAAP

She is a well-baby hospitalist and medical director of Alabama Game Changers, a nonprofit that treats the medical and educational needs of children who struggle scholastically. Her two CATCH grants pioneered a game-changing neurodevelopmental literacy outreach program in schools. She serves on the Alabama Department of Education’s Dyslexia Advisory Council and as the state’s chapter CATCH facilitator.

Fellow Achievement Award

Council on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention

Wendy J. Pomerantz, M.D., M.S., FAAP

She is a pediatric emergency medicine physician in Cincinnati who has led community work in burn prevention, fall prevention and poisoning. A past president of the National Injury Free Coalition for Kids, she has engaged and mentored many new injury prevention researchers and activists.

Susan P. Etheridge, M.D., FAHA, FHRS, FACC, FAAP

She is a board-certified pediatric cardiologist and electrophysiologist. Her research has centered on long QT syndrome and other genetic disorders leading to sudden death in the young.

He serves as the Jane B. Aron Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Tulane University School of Medicine and is pediatrician-in-chief at Children’s Hospital New Orleans.

Seema Jilani, M.D., FAAP

She is a palliative care physician who served on staff at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. Her work in international humanitarian medical care has taken her to war zones and disaster areas where she cared for sick and injured children, with emphasis on those with special or medically complex needs. She communicates effectively and compassionately what is happening on the ground to other pediatricians and the public.

He is a professor of pediatrics and medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison and vice chair for research in the Department of Pediatrics. His National Institutes of Health-funded translational research program focuses on identifying how viral respiratory infections and other environmental and host factors influence the development and acute exacerbations of childhood asthma.

Barbara Zind, M.D., FAAP

She is a community pediatrician in rural western Colorado. During her pediatric career, she has started a malnutrition project in Papua New Guinea, an afterschool program on the Navajo Reservation, an ongoing obesity program called "We Can! Mesa County", and coordinated the administration of chemotherapy for children with cancer in rural western Colorado. She has volunteered in Palestine for 14 years coordinating care for children with chronic diseases and was working in Gaza when the Oct. 7 war started.

Susanne E. Tanski, M.D., M.P.H., FAAP

She is an associate professor of pediatrics at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, section chief and vice chair of general pediatrics and a practicing primary care pediatrician at Dartmouth Health Children’s. Her research focuses on tobacco use among adolescents and young adults, tobacco cessation for patients with cancer, media/marketing influences on adolescent drinking and smoking, the effects of corporate interests on health and the health effects of tobacco use.

Rosario Gomez de Liaño, M.D., Ph.D.

She is professor of ophthalmology at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain) and chief of the motility unit and pediatric ophthalmology at Hospital Universitario Clinico San Carlos of Madrid. She is recognized for her contributions to understanding disease processes and treatments in pediatric ophthalmic patients.

George A. “Tony” Woodward, M.D., M.B.A., FAAP

He is the division head of emergency medicine and medical director for emergency and transport services at Seattle Children’s and a professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington. Additionally, he is the pediatric medical director for Airlift Northwest and sits on the Angel Flight West Board of Directors.

 

Lou Halamek Pediatric Simulation Excellence Award

Isabel T. Gross, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., FAAP

She is an associate professor of pediatrics at Yale University and the incoming chair of the International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research, and Education. She is an internationally recognized simulation-based researcher and a mentor for colleagues around the globe. Her simulation-based research focuses on community outreach simulations, distance simulations and new simulation technologies.

He is a retired adjunct professor of pediatric infectious diseases at McLane Children’s Hospital, Baylor Scott & White Health, in Temple, Texas.

Kimberly G. Montez, M.D., M.P.H., FAAP

She is an associate professor of pediatrics and social sciences and health policy, pediatric vice chair for justice, equity, diversity and inclusion, and associate dean for justice and belonging at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

 

Nia Imani Bodrick, M.D., M.P.H., FAAP

She is a general pediatrician at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. She is assistant professor of pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and is immediate past president of the AAP Washington, D.C., Chapter.

 



Maria Serratto Master Educator Award

Robert D. Ross, M.D., FACC, FAAP

He cofounded the pediatric cardiology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit in 1991. Dr. Ross served as co-director until 2004 and then director until his retirement in 2022. Over that time, 65 fellows graduated from the program, many of whom are in leadership positions in the field.

He is executive vice president, community and population health and clinical professor of pediatrics at Children’s National Hospital.

 



Murray Davidson Award

Melvin B. Heyman, M.D., M.P.H., FAAP

He is professor and vice chair of faculty development and former division chief and training director in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition in the Department of Pediatrics at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco. He was chair of the AAP Section on Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and a member of the AAP Committee on Nutrition.

Jeffery Gould, M.D., FAAP

He has worked with the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative and has influenced his colleagues to advance quality improvement, health services research and work in health equity. He has given peers the framework to be better physicians within communities working collaboratively in a data-driven fashion.

Jeffrey M. Karp, D.M.D., M.S.

He is a clinical associate professor of pediatric dentistry at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and the outgoing chair of the AAP Section on Oral Health.

Jessica Jack, M.D., FAAP

She is a practicing pediatrician at Denver Health in Colorado and an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado. She is the chair of Denver Health’s human papillomavirus strategic initiative workgroup and a supervisor for school-based health centers in Denver. She serves as the AAP Colorado Chapter’s oral health advocate.

Gregory H. Gorman, M.D., M.H.S., FAAP

He is a pediatric nephrologist, clinical informaticist and health services researcher. He works as an informaticist supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs, a child health policy adviser for the Department of Defense and locums physician at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland and Advocate Children's Hospital outside Chicago.

Joseph R. Saccoccio, M.D., M.P.H., FAAP

He is a pediatrician who has worked in the field of child welfare in New York City for his entire career. He recently retired as senior vice president of medical services at New York Foundling.

Todd Nebesio, M.D., FAAP

He is professor of clinical pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. He is director of the clinical endocrinology program at Riley Hospital for Children.

Michael B. Pitt, M.D., FAAP

He is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Minnesota where he is an associate residency program director, associate chair of faculty development and strategic planning, and the fellowship director for hospital medicine. A winner of multiple teaching awards, Dr. Pitt speaks on improving the way medical providers communicate with each other and their patients.

 

Pediatric Otolaryngology Advocacy Award

Kris R. Jatana, M.D.

He is a professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Ohio State University. At Nationwide Children’s Hospital, he serves as director of pediatric otolaryngology quality improvement, medical director for compliance and surgical director of clinical outcomes.

She is a pediatric critical care fellow at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences/Arkansas Children's Hospital. This award is for research in education on “Establishing Evidence of Validity for a Novel Pediatric Airway Management Assessment Tool in Pediatric Trainees: A Pilot Study.”

She is a pediatric intensive care physician at Boston Children’s Hospital and member of the faculty at the Center for Bioethics at Harvard Medical School.



Stephen Gans Distinguished Overseas Lecturer Award

Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Ph.D., M.B.B.S., FRCPCH (U.K.), FAAP

He is the distinguished university professor and founding director of the Institute for Global Health and Development and the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health at the Aga Khan University. He also holds the Robert Harding Inaugural Chair in Global Child Health at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, and is co-director of the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health.

She is the vice chair, academic affairs and faculty development in the Department of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. She is a professor of pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She also is the medical director of the adoption program, which provides pre-adoption consultation, comprehensive post-adoption evaluation and ongoing care of adopted children.

He is chief emeritus of the Division of Pediatric Urology at Children’s National Hospital and professor of urology and pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He is a member and former secretary-treasurer and chair of the AAP Section on Urology, former president of the Society for Pediatric Urology, former editor of the pediatric section of the Journal of Urology and the first executive secretary of the Pediatric Urology Advisory Council to the American Board of Urology.

Ann Stark, M.D., FAAP

She is the only physician who has served as chair of the three most important national neonatal activities: the AAP Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, the AAP Committee on the Fetus and Newborn and the American Board of Pediatrics subboard. She has had enormous impact on clinical care guidelines, education of neonatology trainees and the foundations of board certification in neonatal-perinatal medicine.

He is a pediatric surgeon whose work has advanced the care and treatment of infants born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Dr. Wilson's research on tracheal occlusion and fetal lung development has led to innovative approaches in preoperative stabilization and postnatal management for infants with CDH.
