‘How do you get them to accept more food?’ Picky eating in focus

September 19, 2024

A pediatric gastroenterologist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, says his presentation on picky eaters will be relevant to all pediatricians, in the office and at home.

“If you have young kids at home, you can use some of the strategies to get them to accept vegetables and things that kids typically don't eat,” said Praveen S. Goday, M.D., M.B.B.S., FAAP, who will present “Food for Thought: Practical Interventions for Picky Eating” from 2-3 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Sept. 29 in room W414AB of the convention center. The session also will be livestreamed.

Dr. Goday, a member of the AAP Section on Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and clinical professor of pediatrics at The Ohio State University, will demonstrate assessment and treatment plans in case presentations and discuss nutritional values, vitamin deficiencies and meal-replacement shakes.

“So up until about 14 months of age, kids will eat almost anything. And then they all tend to have this picky-eating phase,” Dr. Goday said. “If you have picky-eating kids, how do you get them to accept more food? What does the research say?”

The session will answer those questions and help attendees differentiate picky eating from pediatric feeding disorder (PFD), defined in a 2019 journal article co-authored by Dr. Goday as “impaired oral intake that is not age-appropriate, and is associated with medical, nutritional, feeding skill, and/or psychosocial dysfunction.”

“It is important for pediatricians to be able to differentiate the two because picky eating mostly requires reassurance, whereas pediatric feeding disorder requires a proper diagnosis and then management,” Dr. Goday said.
