AAP advocacy spurs update to 2021 E/M guideline

March 12, 2021

In the 2021 guidelines for office visit evaluation and management (E/M) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, the American Medical Association (AMA) determined that any in-office laboratory test or other services that contain no physician work could not be counted under data. Members of the AAP Committee on Coding and Nomenclature had concerns about this interpretation and took them to the CPT oversight workgroup.

Because of the AAP’s continued advocacy, the AMA has updated its guidance through a technical correction. For details on this and other updates, visit https://services.aap.org/en/practice-management/2021-office-based-em-changes/new-2021-office-based-em-updates-from-cpt-errata/ or read the full technical correction on the AMA’s website.
