Fellows in the News: Dr. Garrett appointed to White House fellowship, and more :

The following fellows recently were honored for their work.

Dr. AltschulerDr. AltschulerSteven M. Altschuler, M.D., of Philadelphia, was named senior vice president of health affairs at the University of Miami and chief executive officer of UHealth-University of Miami Health System.

Dr. Altschuler previously served as president and CEO at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

 

 

 

Dr. EnglanderDr. EnglanderRobert Englander, M.D., M.P.H., FAAP, of Washington, D.C., was named associate dean for undergraduate education at University of Minnesota Medical School.

Most recently, he led national efforts around competency-based medical education as senior director of competency-based learning and assessment at the Association of American Medical Colleges.

 



Dr. GarrettDr. GarrettAndrew L. Garrett, M.D., M.P.H., FAAP, of Bethesda, Md., was appointed to a one-year fellowship with the White House Leadership Development Program to receive advanced leadership training with a cohort of federal employees. During the fellowship, Dr. Garrett will step away from his role as director of the National Disaster Medical System at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Assistant professor of preventive medicine and biometrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, he is the assistant secretary for preparedness and response liaison to the AAP Disaster Preparedness Advisory Council.

 

Dr. JohnsonDr. JohnsonRobert L. Johnson, M.D., FAAP, of Newark, N.J., received the Desmond Tutu Excellence Award from the American Friends of Phelophepa Train, a charity that supports health care in rural South Africa using medical trains.

The Sharon and Joseph L. Muscarelle Endowed Dean, Dr. Johnson is professor of pediatrics, associate professor of psychiatry and director of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

He serves as chair of the N.J. Governor’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS and Related Blood-Borne Pathogens and board member of the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education at the National Academies of Science. Dr. Johnson is a vice chair of the Community Prevention Task Force of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Past president of the N.J. Board of Medical Examiners, he is past chair of the AAP Committee on Pediatric Workforce and represented pediatrics on the Department of Health and Human Services’ Council on Graduate Medical Education and the Pediatric Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

 

Dr. KakaralaDr. KakaralaPrasad C. Kakarala, M.D., FAAP, of Tiffin, Ohio, received the Distinguished Youth Asset Builder Award from the Tiffin Rotary Club, Tiffin Optimist Club and Seneca County Family & Children First Council for mentorship of high school students and support of vocational training through scholarship and support groups.

Clinical associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Toledo, he is a member of the AAP Section on International Child Health.


 


Dr. PeitsoDr. PeitsoMarilyn J. Peitso, M.D., FAAP, of Sartell, Minn., received the 2015 Betty Hubbard Maternal and Child Health Leadership Award from the Minnesota Maternal and Child Health Advisory Task Force and Minnesota Department of Health.

Past president of the AAP Minnesota Chapter and chair of the chapter’s quality improvement committee, she is a member of the state’s Health Care Financing Task Force. Dr. Peitso serves on the Minnesota Medical Association’s Board of Trustees and Foundation Board of Directors. She works with pediatric hospitalist and care coordination teams within her health care group in central Minnesota.
