Code 31515 (laryngoscopy direct, with or without tracheoscopy; for aspiration) is appropriate for reporting tracheal suctioning for meconium. Note that when further resuscitation includes separate placement of an endotracheal tube for emergency airway, code 31500 may be additionally reported with modifier 59 appended to indicate a distinct procedural service. Attendance at delivery (99464) is additionally reported unless the physician also provided newborn resuscitation including provision of positive pressure ventilation or chest compressions in the presence of acute inadequate ventilation or cardiac output (99465). If the newborn is critically ill and receives initial critical care services later on that same date, code 99468 may be separately reported. Modifier 25 will be required on any significant and separately identifiable evaluation and management service such as critical care (99468).
