The first update to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) since implementation will take place on October 1, 2016 (the beginning of fiscal year 2017 for the federal government). Additions and revisions to the code set are not valid until that date and should not be used for reporting diagnoses for dates of service prior to October 1, 2016. The list of code changes released indicates there are 1,943 new codes, 422 revised codes, and deletion of 4 subcategories of codes. However, most changes are unlikely to affect pediatric reporting, and many others are minimal changes and corrections. For instance, multiple codes in category S49 have revised code descriptors for Salter-Harris fractures of the humerus.
