Diagnosis coding for open wounds of the skin with International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) is significantly different from coding with International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). In addition to expanded codes for reporting open wounds and differentiation of lacerations, puncture wounds, and open bites, a key instruction for reporting complicated wounds is no longer provided. This has been a source of confusion for some. Although ICD-9-CM codes cannot be reported for services provided on and after October 1, 2015, this article will contrast the differences in reporting with ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM to illustrate where the focus of code selection has changed when reporting open wounds.
