Most clinical staff time is accounted for in the practice expense value assigned to each evaluation and management (E/M) service. The process for assigning relative value units to services includes identification of the types of clinical staff (eg, registered nurse, medical assistant) and average time spent by clinical staff for the typical encounter. As the team approach to care and resources necessary for management of complex episodic and chronic conditions have received additional attention in recent years, new codes have been structured to recognize clinical staff time and resources beyond those typical for care of acute and less complex conditions.

New in 2016 are codes for clinical staff time spent face-to-face providing care to a patient under the supervision of a physician or other qualified health care professional who has provided an office or other outpatient E/M service at the same session.
